About Protocol Labs

Protocol Labs is an open-source research and development laboratory focused on building protocols and tools for the decentralized web. Its core business centers on IPFS, a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol for content-addressed storage and sharing, and Filecoin, a blockchain-based storage network that incentivizes data persistence. The company's primary value proposition lies in replacing fragile, centralized data storage with a resilient, content-addressed system that reduces dependency on single points of failure and enables verifiable data integrity. It addresses the market pain point of data loss, censorship, and high retrieval costs associated with traditional HTTP-based infrastructure.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Protocol Labs made a significant and controversial move: it terminated funding for Shipyard, the independent collective that served as the core maintenance team for IPFS. Shipyard announced it would wind down all engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure operations by September 30, 2026, affecting major projects such as Kubo, Helia, Boxo, Rainbow, IPFS Desktop, and IPFS Companion. Public infrastructure including ipfs.io, dweb.link, delegated-ipfs.dev, and IPFS bootstrap nodes will also cease operation. Protocol Labs retains ownership of these domains and will decide their fate. In response, Molly Mackinlay, Head of Engineering at Protocol Labs, stated that IPFS will not shut down but will transition to a "lighter-weight maintenance model" via grants from the IPFS Foundation to individual maintainers. This development has left the protocol's software without dedicated full-time maintainers, raising concerns about long-term security and compatibility, although the underlying code remains accessible.

Protocol Labs, founded by Juan Benet in 2014, began with the IPFS whitepaper draft, proposing a content-addressed peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol to replace HTTP's inefficiencies and single points of failure. In 2015, the lab was formally established and joined Y Combinator. A year later, it created libp2p, IPLD, multiformats, and Orbit, with IPFS storing 5 billion files by June 2017. In 2017, Protocol Labs launched Filecoin, a blockchain-based incentive layer for IPFS, raising $257 million in its ICO—a record at the time. However, Filecoin's mainnet faced repeated delays due to underestimated engineering complexity, and governance centralization concerns emerged. In April 2024, Shipyard was spun off as an independent maintainer for IPFS, but in August 2026, Protocol Labs declined to renew funding, forcing Shipyard to wind down IPFS operations by September 30, 2026. This leaves key public infrastructure like ipfs.io and dweb.link without dedicated stewards, marking a shift to lighter-weight stewardship for IPFS.

Over the past six months, Protocol Labs has made key progress in decentralized storage and content addressing. First, IPFS launched Optimistic Provide, reducing content publication latency from over 13 seconds to under 1 second, a tenfold improvement. Second, Filecoin Onchain Cloud (FOC) went live on mainnet in August 2026, offering a programmable storage layer that has already stored 49.41 TiB across 478 active datasets and 81 payer wallets. Storage costs about $2.50 per TiB per month, with PDP proofs verified on-chain every 24 hours, and Filebeam CDN enables retrieval in seconds.

Official development priorities include adding a compute layer to FOC so workloads run physically near data to reduce latency and costs; further IPFS optimizations like peer filtering, deeper Reprovide Sweep integration, and network caching. Additionally, Protocol Labs Research has been reorganized into PL R&D to strengthen long-term R&D.
